Single Essay/Short Excerpt!

Spanish actor said, “You forgot your lines. No. You definitely didn't get the part.  You're beautiful though, what nationality are you?”

Our attraction to each other had nothing to do with each other.  During that car ride, I found an unusual way out of Jose’s.  This Spanish actor was looking for a way to make him appear wanted for the benefit of a more beautiful young Girl.  She lived in an apartment next door that he paid for.  He said he wanted her to have a roommate. Their apartments were three blocks from Chicago's Brookfield Zoo.  I pictured a monkey playing on my lap.

“Oh my God!”  I screamed.  “I’ll do it!  She doesn’t have any pet Iguanas, does she?”

Current Lake Michigan breeze is painting my body as if the breeze were colored paint...

and I were a ball. It tumbles through my large open window.

I would name the paint color, silver.

Are you in Chicago near the lake?  What color would you name the paint?

My Mom and Chrissy (Re posted from Feb. 2011)

My Mom and Chrissy

Earth, Wind and Fire played a song I stumbled upon yesterday and it wholly reminded me of my dead mother.  There was no way I could listen to it so on the playlist, I skipped forward.  It's been four years but the gut wrenched emotion, remains.  Knowing myself, if I endured the entire song, I'd end up with a scrunched face and a river of tears.  But I was at work on a due manuscript, I was working, no time to cry, put your cursor on the arrow and bypass this song, now.

Chrissy, not my twin sister but my other twin sister, seriously.  Chrissy brought old school cassette tapes of my moms favorite songs and played them her final two days alive.  How so very wonderful.  That gesture was the most heart loving I'd ever seen, felt.  I couldn't do that.  I couldn't even touch the cassette tape for fear of losing it.

Oh, there's so much to write about my fabulous parents - but my stomach is wrenched, like twisting a wet towel dry, seconds after I wrote Earth, Wind and Fire.  And now I have to work.  Yeah!

Frosty in July!

The best word to describe the Lake Michigan breeze that I feel today (my home office window allows an unobstructed lake breeze!) is FROSTY.

BIC - pasted from Bransford blog.

The Greatest Strength of a Writer: Willpower

The great Jane Yolen has a name for this: BIC. Butt. In. Chair. That is the writing process. Butt in chair.

You could also call it:

OMGTWISNTBICGOBINTW: "Oh my god the weather is so nice today but I can't go outside because I need to write."

IRWICGTTBGBIHTW: "I really wish I could go to that baseball game but I have to write."

DMMIJGTSATBCSUITOS: "Don't mind me, I'm just going to stare at this blank computer screen until I think of something."

Just about everyone on the planet thinks about writing a novel at some point. Many of them really could and many of them could do it really well.

But there's only one way to actually do it: BIC. Powering through when you want to stop, blocking out days on the calendar when there are more fun things you could be doing, staring at the pad or screen early mornings and late nights, and most of all, setting aside your doubts along the way.

And that's of course even before you summon your willpower to try and jump through the hoops necessary to get the thing published.

If writing is always fun you may be doing it wrong.

E. Hicks Teaching/Good News, eh?

  • The basis of your life is freedom; the purpose of your life is joy.
  • You are a creator; you create with your every thought.
  • Anything that you can imagine is yours to be or do or have.
  • You are choosing your creations as you are choosing your thoughts.
  • Your emotions are your most powerful indicator of what you are creating in any moment.

Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin ARE Social Media

From slow (even if yours is not forced to be) research, over a long time period and a lot of convincing - these three are it, as in enough!

FB - miracle happened because of Bransford, Rinzler, and I thank you.

Lindedin - miracle happened because of my twin brother Shawn, thanks Shawnie.

Twitter - I have no idea.  Perhaps it is because that white Twitter bird logo flew by and tucked me under her wing.

Those three, agree?

Chicago Reader Opinion Changed! For the better!

Congratulations Chicago Reader!  The Grass Gap issue, seven, seven, 2011 by Dumke and Joravsky is an outstandingly great literary piece.

"Think before you speak," I've heard.  I do!  But I don't wait.

"You need the oxygen!"  The wise old Chinese man said.

GRAPEFRUIT — The new superfruit?

Jamaican Observer
Thursday, July 07, 2011

The grapefruit is a type of citrus known for its sour taste. The fruit became popular after being bred in Jamaica in the 18th century and is found mainly in sub-tropic areas. It is rich in vitamin C and potassium; it is a good source of folic acid, iron and calcium, and is an inexpensive way to add a boost of nutrition to your diet. But did you know that this fruit is known to help prevent a wide range of illnesses?  This phenomenal fruit comes in many varieties, white, pink and red, being the most popular, and has been credited for being a great source of vitamin C, an aid in the prevention of the common cold and flu. Red and pink grapefruits have high amounts of vitamin A, potassium, folate, calcium, iron and also the antioxidant lycopene.
Nutritionist Donovan Grant, says: "The grapefruit provides organic water; this means a lot of liquid is present inside the fruit which is water compatible to the cells, making it better for the body and also quenches thirst." He recommends grapefruit and grapefruit juice in an effort to maintain a healthy population and our current life expectancy rate. This fruit is also recommended for its health benefits by the American Heart Association to at-risk patients as well as those already diagnosed with heart disease.

Grapefruit is said to be helpful in the treatment of acid reflux as it has an alkaline reaction after digestion. It also contains properties that may strengthen the arteries, cleanse the body of extra oestrogen — which may cause breast cancer — lower your cholesterol, and help to control diabetes. It has been known to relieve sore throat, aid in digestion, weight loss and insomnia, and in some cases it helps the stomach, preventing pancreatic cancer. Grapefruit also has the health benefit of preventing the symptoms of arthritis.

This....is....Editing! "Publishers, hi. Of course I self edit." Sheila said.

The Chicago Reader morphed, I'd say several years ago, from a literary AND free paper to another wanna be Chicao Magazine.  New City Chicago now stands as a true literary AND free paper, the Reader, no longer.

Recent Chicago Reader Best of Chicago 2011 SUBJECTIVE

Yes, be warned, it's one writer and one opinion, unless you look right to the skinny yellow column where the Reader decided to throw in a quick Readers' poll list.  In the introduction paragraph, it's said, "hey, we have that counterculture Reader legacy to uphold."  Who's we?  We is one writer plucked from a boiling, bubbling pot.

Unless you want to read what one writer thinks of as the Best Chef Downshift Animal Division.  What?  It doesn't make sense and I don't think people care.

Did you read it?

Twit Me! Oh my God! I was so wrong...

Why did I think, "okay, tweet is the verb so it's like other present, past, future verbs"?  And, I'm twitting?  I promise you, nobody has ever been as humiliated as I am right now.  Because - it's great to think things but I didn't ask anybody or fully find it in the dictionary.

Will you forgive someone that's brainless, if they have good intentions?  You're right.  The very most brainless thing would be not seeing it (actually it was brought to my attention, ahem).

p.s. i'm just a writer who won't quit.  yes, despite that outlandish mistake, i'm a writer.  i know i am because i've gotten rejected so many times.

Bransford and Rinzler on Twittering/Wise Chinese Man Returns

Yesterday I said I'd need to start all over again and that was not accurate.  I began in the first place because of a  twitter post by Bransford and after several hours reading/working from Rinzler post on twitter - I'm taking giant like baby steps forward.  Oooh, it feels outstanding because I feel confident.  What match is there to feeling confident?  I really hoped to feel confident about twits!

This lucky miracle I owe to Bransford and Rinzler.  Congratulations!

"Ah," Wise Chinese man said, "you learn you have choice to learn, and you learn."

Am I the only one that can hear this Chinese man?

I'm a bad, bad girl...

because I twitted irresponsibly.  Read a tweet, after all, they can't be longer than like two sentences, hit Re Tweet!  Yeah!  Keep hitting it!  I clicked my mouse on many a Reply response, after replying words that made sense, to someone.

A lot of professional, successful people tweet.  That's why I have to start all over again.

Thank goodness for Alan Rinzler's post on twitting for writers.  I twit the book biz and since that's so entirely selfish, I'll see if I can join a puppy shelter twit.

Do you twit?
