After realizing the strategic significance of Virginia, Richmond Virginia it became the capital of the former Confederate States of America, 80 miles from Washington.
Virginia became a deadly line of battle, for a soldier's hazardous excursion to Richmond. Richmond was Confederacy's capital until its end in April 1865.
